Social media is a commonly used and very powerful form of communication and marketing for today’s practices. While social media has many great benefits when used properly, there are many costly hazards that can be encountered just the same. Governing bodies, including state organizations have implemented general social media guidelines for healthcare facilities, in effort to minimize risk of incident and exposure to healthcare facilities, providers, workforce members and patients. Further, HIPAA describes the 18 Protected Health Identifiers (PHI) that practices must have adequate policy and procedure implemented so as to best ensure the security of these identifiers. If your practice uses social media, you must first be adequately trained upon social media guidelines and have a sound social media policy in place. This webinar is designed to alert you to the variety of ways social media might be used in a clinic and how to implement processes to ensure compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards when doing so. Although the type or platform for social media can change from moment-to-moment, the principles offered in this lesson can protect you and your workforce members from violations and penalties.
